ENSC33 Diesel Heat Pump

Team Members: Chanceler Cole, Joao Pedro Moreira,

Shane Guy, Jamie Tonna

Faculty Advisor: Chris McFarland

Sponsor: Hotstart Inc

Project Overview: The 2011/2012 Hotstart sponsored project tasked the students with developing a heat pump that could be used to supplement a forced circulation block heater for diesel engines in standby power applications.  The prototype is on the Caterpillar generator that sits behind the McCarthey Athletic center.  This project will pick up where they left off and attempt to take this project to the next stage in development.

Summary Statement of Project Goal: To continue the development of a heat pump to be used in conjunction with a forced circulation heating system on a standby generator in order to bring the project closer to market

Project Deliverables: The students will need to design a functioning heat pump from components that can be sourced in the open market.  This will require significant knowledge of how a heat pump works and significant research in to the availability of each of the components necessary to build one.  Hotstart will offer significant guidance in these areas in order to expedite the development.  If enough progress is made in the research, the parts will be ordered and prototypes will be built.  If there is sufficient time at this point, the prototypes will be tested.

Management & Communication Expectations: The schedule will be as flexible as possible with an expectation of weekly status meetings at Hotstart.
